The prototype Lockheed XP-38 Lightning, 37-457, survived only 16 days and 11:50 flying time. No air-to-air shots are known to exist of this beautiful bird. Artist Larry Lapadura captures how it might have looked on its last flight, February 11, 1939, with 1st Lt. Ben Kelsey at the controls.
