AAHS members, aviation history buffs, photographers, authors, modelers, and those that enjoy the California sunshine in February, plan on attending the American Aviation Historical Society’s (AAHS) Annual Gathering on Saturday, February 13, at the historic Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) in Glendale, California. This is a PRIVATE VIEWING of Disney's immaculate restoration of an icon of early California aviation. Hear the history of this famous building and the significant role it played in Southern California's aviation industry. GCAT is privately owned and will have only very LIMITED public access. Sign up NOW to be able to see this unique building that served as the "airport of the stars" and hosted early commercial air transportation on the west coast as well as serving as a primary arrival and departure point for early trans-continental air travel. The event includes: February 12, Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
February 13, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
February 14, Sunday, 10:00 a.m. (Optional) Join aviation buffs on a scenic fly-over of Glendale and scenic Southern California in the ’Thunderbird Air Service” DC-3A, operated by Aviator Flight Training. This DC-3, which served as a C-53 during WWII, dropping paratroopers in Sicily, Germany, and on D-Day, has been refitted as a luxury civilian liner, piloted by warbird pilot/owner Dan Wotring, of Aviator Flight Training (www.aviatorflighttraining.com). This scenic flight, over downtown Los Angeles, San Pedro harbor, the Queen Mary and other notable locations, is just $99.00 per seat.
The flight(s) will operate from the El Monte Airport (About 20 minutes form GCAT - maps will be available at registration). The flight will depart at 10:30 a.m. If signups exceed capacity, a second flight will depart at noon. Refunds will be made only if the flight(s) must be canceled for mechanical or weather issues, or by request made 48 hours in advance to schedule departure.
