Wings Over Florida chronicles the story of flying in the "Sunshine State", from the early pioneers in gliders and balloons, to recent developments in the space program. Pensacola Naval Air Station was established during World War I. In the ensuing 85 years, thousands of U.S. Navy and Marine pilots have learned to fly there. Florida had the first scheduled airline in the world, the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line made its inaugural flight on January 1,1914. Pan American Airways made their first mail flight from Key West to Cuba in October 1927. Pan American first used the name Clipper on. the three Sikorsky S-40 flying boats that operated from the Dinner Key base at Miami in 1931. Florida has a rich aviation history and this book does a great job, mainly with excellent photographs, in telling the story of aviation history in the "Sunshine State." - AI
