DOUGLAS C-124 "GLOBEMASTER H" by Earl Berlin ©2000 Air Force Legends #206. Order from Steve Ginter, 1754 Warfield, Simi Valley, CA 93063, ISBN 0-942612-95-7, soft-cover, 8.5"x11", 154 pages, many photos and drawings.

The book tells the story of the Globemaster I (C-74 of which only 14 were built) and its evolution into the
Globemaster II, the C-124. The C-124 retained tine wing, slightly modified tail surfaces and engines of the C-74. The fuselage was greatly enlarged and the landing gear was modified. The first C-124 was built from the conversion of the fifth C-74. Air Force personnel referred to the C-124 as "Old Shaky" or just plain "Shaky". Power is provided by four Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Majors. This engine is sometimes called the "corncob" due to its 28 cylinders being in four rows of seven each. 72 of the book's 154 pages are devoted to the service of the aircraft in different units and commands of the Air Force including reserves and National Guard units. 60 pages are devoted to the technical descriptions. There is also a listing of C-124 aircraft on display at museums. If you want to know more about the C-124 or refresh your service remembrance of this aircraft, this book is for you.
